Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai! Episode 1 - First Impressions

If there's one word which can be used to describe the emotions which went through my head while watching Chuunibyou, I would say it'd have to be the word nostalgia. How many of us have waved our hands at an automatic door shouting "open sesame" in hopes it will open magically open (which, it does...sort of)? I'm sure the majority of us, if not all of us have done so. So what do automatic doors and shouting open sesame and this show have in common? Absolutely nothing, and absolutely everything.

Chu2Koi revolves around the life of Togashi Yuuta, who suffered from chuunibyou in middle school, which roughly translates to "Middle School 2nd Year Syndrome". Individuals who suffer from this disease either act like a know-it-all adult who takes pride in their unlimited knowledge, or believe they have supernatural powers unlike anyone else. Yuuta was determined to put that history behind him, only to meet the main female protagonist, Takanashi Rikka, who he unavoidably forms a contract with through a random series of events.

This show is undoubtedly a school-themed anime. This show is also undoubtedly a KyoAni show, which can be seen in the unmistakably moe art style. The characters are adorable, the story line seems to be an interesting mix between slice-of-life, comedy and school life, perhaps even a bit of romance along the way, and the character designs are top notch. The soundtrack itself has already grabbed my attention, including that seizure-inducing opening sequence. The amusement factor of the show has definitely hit the spot, and there definitely seems to be a structure this show will follow in terms of character development. We've only been formally introduced to three characters so far, so there's plenty of room for further character interactions, which I'm certainly looking forward to. With a couple talented seiyuuus featured, including Fukuyama Jun and Uchida Maaya, who just recently voiced Rea from Sankarea, could this be KyoAni's slice-of-life show of the season?
